Now is the perfect time to remind ourselves the importance of preventing sun damage, reducing the risk of skin cancer, and maintaining healthy skin for the months ahead.
1. Preventing Sun Damage:
Sun protection is not only important in the summer. As we head into the cooler months, keep in mind that daily sun protection is still a top priority. Use of broad-spectrum sunscreens of SPF 30 or higher should be applied every 2 hours. Protective clothing including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses is also essential. Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 am to 4 pm when UV rays are the strongest. Keep in mind that most sun damage can occur while driving in a car, especially to the face, forearms, and hands.
2. Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer:
Yearly skin exams are crucial for early detection of skin cancer. Individuals at higher risk of skin cancer includes those with fair skin, a history of sunburns, numerous moles or a family history of skin cancer. In addition to annual skin checks at a dermatology office, check your skin regularly to monitor for new growths or changes in old growths, even on parts of the body that aren’t exposed to the sun. It is recommended to follow the ABCDEs of melanoma (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving changes). Early detection saves lives!
3. Maintaining Healthy Skin:
In addition to sun protection and skin cancer prevention, the best way to enhance our skin health is through hydration. It is important to drink water throughout the day while limiting coffee, alcohol and smoking. Limit showers to 10 minutes and use lukewarm water. Use gentle cleansers and avoid harsh products that contain alcohol and fragrances as this can strip the skin of its natural oils. We recommend using a good moisturizing cream in a jar as it provides the thickest formulation to combat dry skin.
At AllPhases Dermatology, our clinical team can offer the knowledge needed to prevent further sun damage, perform thorough skin exams that can be the key to catching melanoma and other skin cancers early, and personalize skin care advice based on each individual unique skin concerns.
