Why is it important?
Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays are a major cause of skin cancer such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. According to Skin Cancer Foundation, using sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher can reduce the risk of developing skin cancer by 40-50%.
Other benefits:
- Anti-aging. UV rays can cause premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and discolorations.
- If you have cosmetic procedures done, you want to protect your investments by using sunscreen daily.
- You are less likely to get sunburn which can be painful.
Chemical vs Physical sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens (organic, carbon-based compounds) absorb into the skin and usually blends into to the skin betters. It converts UV rays into heat. Avoid chemical sunscreens if you have melasma as this may exacerbate the condition.
Physical sunscreens (Zinc Oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on the skin and sometimes hard to blend into the skin. It reflects UVA and UVB and works immediately when applied.
